Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The fluid had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the liquid was probably human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to solve the mystery" and have requested to the residents for information.

An important political figure commented the vandalism left him without words and needed to be solved rapidly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on people of migrant background in 2020.
