The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable strengths: skilled human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
