At least 13 people perish and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
